One of my very favorite places to go and photograph birdlife is Western Springs.  It’s a lovely park with a natural lake in the middle.  I guess to Aucklanders it is what Central Park is to New Yorkers.

Historically and Geographically, it is an important place to Aucklanders, when town water supply was first set up, Western Springs was Aucklands water supplier the old pumping station is next door at the Museum of Transport and Technology.  A Stadium/Speedway track on the other side, is where I attended the David Bowie Concert and U2 amongst many others in my youth, as well as spending many a Saturday night at speedway, sitting on Pine Tree bend snogging with boyfriends.  The Auckland Zoo sits at the rear of the Park and you can hear Elephants and Lions as you supervise your children in the playground.  So Western Springs is special, it’s a sanctuary in the hustle and bustle of the City, a peaceful place, a place of natural beauty…

Two days ago, some of that peace was shattered with the discovery of 80 birds dead and dying, having been poisoned by an evil peice of excrement posing as a human being, a box of alphachloralose poison was found discarded in a rubbish bin nearby.  Ducks, Geese, Swans, Seagulls, Sparrows, Pukekos etc all found dead or dying.  Thankfully the SPCA birdwing was able to save approximately 60 birds and they were released back into the park today.  Here is the story .

Who would do such a thing and why?  What kind of horrible person goes to a place where families take young children to picnic, where people go to enjoy nature and relax and kills part of it?  What kind of twisted psyche thinks this is a fun thing to do to fellow citizens?

I hope the police track down this sick and twisted person and deal to him/her appropriately.
